SEPTEMBER | GOD MADE ME
Best Books for Babies and Toddlers: SEPTEMBER Edition
August taught us that God made everything. September makes it personal: God made ME. This is such a rich truth for little ones. The same God who created the mountains and the oceans and the animals also formed them, knows them, and loves them completely.
In Monthly Menus, September's curriculum anchors this truth with Psalm 139 and gives caregivers simple, beautiful ways to weave it into everyday rhythms — diaper changes, bath time, tickle sessions. "God made your nose! Where is your nose?" It's theology through delight. Here are the books I’m pairing with this month’s theme:
Who Made You? by The Daily Grace Co — I listed this for September, but the truth in its pages echoes throughout every month of Monthly Menus. God's character is impossible to isolate; one aspect always points to another.
From Head to Toe by Eric Carle — My preschooler’s favorite for movement! Each animal does a different action — stomp like an elephant, wiggle like a crocodile — and he loves acting them out. It’s a great way to get wiggles out while connecting movement to God’s good design for our bodies.
123 God Made Me by B&H Kids — I love the rhyming, counting, and verses on each page, plus the diverse illustrations, which matter so much when we're emphasizing that God created each of us uniquely.
Known by Sally Lloyd Jones — This is a beautiful book that brings Psalm 139 into a toddler's world. As little ones follow a day in another child's life, they hear the comforting truth that God sees them, knows them, and loves them completely.
Eyes, Nose, Belly, Toes by Krupa Bhojani Playforth MD— This book goes beyond a simple “point and name” body book. Written by a pediatrician, it explains how each body part serves a purpose. It's not explicitly Christian, but isn't it amazing how God's truth is echoed in science?
God Made You Too by Chelsea Tornetto — This is a brightly illustrated rhyming adventure that perfectly bridges the truth from August (God Made Everything) to September’s truth (God Made Me).
God Came Near To Me by Kristin Wetherell — Grace Habib does some of the most beautiful illustrations I've seen in children's books. I love how this book covers the incarnation of Jesus and His human body. What a treasure.
God Made You Nose to Toes by Leslie Parrott — I’m a sucker for a good rhyme, and this one delivers! The author weaves God’s truth so effortlessly into a catchy, sing-song rhythm. (P.S. Am I the only one who finds it charming that someone named Parrott wrote a book featuring a toucan?)
