Toddler Book Basket: God Gives Good Gifts
In our modern culture, November often rushes us into a flurry of consumerism, narrowing our focus to the gifts we have yet to receive. This month, we get to push against that pull as we train our little ones to notice the Giver of all good gifts: God Himself. As November tiptoes toward Advent, we give thanks for Jesus’s first coming and begin to quietly anticipate His promised return.
November’s Monthly Menus theme invites us to practice gratitude for the gifts God has already given, including the rhythms of weather that come down from the sky. These are some of the books we reach for as we slow down, take note of God’s provision, and practice saying “thank you” together.
Here are a few books to tuck into your book basket as you explore the theme God Gives Good Gifts with your little one:
Happy (Psalm 92) by Sally Lloyd Jones — A brightly illustrated rhyming adventure that perfectly bridges the August Monthly Menu truth “God Made Everything” with the September Monthly Menu truth “God Made Me”.
Play In Any Weather: Indestcructibes Book — This book does such a beautiful job connecting everyday experiences (including weather!) to praise. It reminds us that joy and gratitude aren’t dependent on circumstances, but rooted in the goodness of the God who gives good gifts.
Thank you God, from A to Z by Pamela Kennedy — A simple book of everyday things children can thank God for throughout their day. This is one of those books that grows with your child as they begin practicing their alphabet.
I See You Wonder by Deborah Farmer Kris — One of God’s great gifts is wonder! Curiosity about our world and wonder so often lead us to notice new things about God’s creation or His word. If we let it, this moves us to praise and thanksgiving to God.
Why Books Like These Matter
As we move through November, gratitude becomes a quiet act of resistance. When we help our children notice what has already been given, we help them resist a culture of consumption. These small practices of thankfulness prepare our hearts for Advent, shaping us to receive Christ not as one more gift to open, but as the greatest gift already given.
